The weekend Mass schedule at Church of the Gesu will be:
Saturday: 4:30 pm
Sunday: 8:00 am, 10:00 am, and 11:30 am

The new Mass schedule will be implemented on July 1, 2017.

As you know, for the past year we have been engaged in a process to determine the need for and the possibility of a revised Mass schedule at Gesu. We have consulted broadly among the various commissions, the Pastoral Council, the Parish staff and with all who responded to our survey.  Keeping all concerns in mind, we recommend that the Sunday Mass schedule be as follows: 8:00 am, 10:00 am, and 11:30 am.  Our Saturday 4:30 pm vigil liturgy will remain unchanged.

Since the church can accommodate 800 persons, we are confident that there will be room for everyone at each Mass. We believe that this new schedule will provide several benefits to our parish.  The schedule will provide additional time between two Sunday Masses for our Parish School of Religion (PSR) sessions.  We hope that more families with PSR students will be able to attend Mass together before or after the classes (or at the Saturday Vigil Mass if they choose).  Further, the new schedule will allow us to offer other programs for busy individuals and families in that interval.  Examples include choir rehearsal, sacramental preparation events, adult faith formation seminars and discussions, and planning sessions for many of our parish faith formation programs.

We also wish to address the staffing issue.  Gesu has been very lucky to have three priests on staff.  Those days will not continue. In fact, when Fr. Thomas leaves, there is no plan to send someone in his place.  The Jesuits who serve at John Carroll University often help us and we are certainly grateful to them when they can assist us with confessions and as speakers for some of our many parish programs. but we cannot always count on their availability.

While the above reasons are compelling, the principal reason for the change is to provide a richer and better Sunday Mass experience for the parish. With these changes, we anticipate a fuller church at all of our Masses which will significantly enhance our worship. The Second Vatican Council called for a more “full” and “active” participation in the liturgy for all Catholics, and we think the new Mass schedule will give us an environment where that will be easier to accomplish.

The new Mass schedule will take effect this summer beginning on July 1.  We realize that this entails a change in our regular weekend patterns, and summer brings a change in family patterns as well.  We will communicate this change to our parishioners and those nearby who periodically worship with us in a variety of ways.

We are very grateful to all of you for the help and suggestions you have made during this time of planning for the future of our parish, and for participating in the recent survey regarding your preferred Mass time. We especially appreciate your flexibility and generosity as we put these changes into effect in the coming months. Please note that every Sunday Mass time has been changed, so, in a sense, we are all in this together, with everyone accommodating themselves to a change in their Mass time.
