Mass Location Updates
Our church interior is getting a much-needed refresh including refinishing, painting, and a tabernacle move as we prepare to enter our 100th year. Thank you for your patience and support as we ensure our church remains functional and beautiful for generations to come.
With the scaffolding now in place, we have reevaluated the physical environment of the church and want to ensure that we are providing a safe, prayerful space. For that reason, we have decided to shift our Mass locations:
- 4:30 PM - Family Center (and livestream)
- 8:00 AM - Marian Chapel
- 10:00 AM - Family Center
- 11:30 AM - Family Center
Welcome!
A Message From Our Pastor
Welcome to the Church of the Gesu - we are so glad you are here! In the past 100 years, Gesu has grown from its humble beginnings of approximately 40 families to a thriving parish of over 2,700+ families today. It has flourished as a center of learning and a faith-filled community dedicated to living lives for the greater glory of God. In the last few years, we welcomed a record number of new families into our parish, and Gesu continues to grow! I am confident the founding Jesuits and parishioners who began this community 100 years ago would be proud of the vibrant parish and school we have become. What a bright future!
Whether you are visiting or are already a member of our community, I invite you to look through these pages and familiarize yourself with all that Gesu has to offer. You will learn more about our active parish and the many ways it serves our community. We invite you to join us anytime throughout the year and embrace being a special part of Gesu.

Fr. Lukas M. Laniauskas, SJ

The Jesuits
The Midwest JesuitsThe Society of Jesus, or the Jesuits, is a Roman Catholic order of priests and brothers founded nearly 500 years ago by Saint Ignatius of Loyola. Church of the Gesu is a part of the Midwest Province of the Society of Jesus. We seek to live the mission of Saint Ignatius of Loyola to "find God in all things" and to dedicate ourselves to the "greater glory of God."
What does Gesu mean to you? Here's what our parishioners said:
"Being part of Gesu, where I've watched my family grow, feels like being wrapped in a warm, comforting embrace. Each corner of the church holds a special memory—our wedding vows exchanged at the altar, the joyful splashes of water during our children's baptisms, and the proud moments of their first communions. It’s where we sought solace during the funeral of my father and found strength in our community."
"Gesu has been at the center of my life even before going to 1st grade. The Gesu connection is so important to me. It is my church for sacraments, my grade school, I taught PSR for 30+ years, ran the building campaign in the 1990s, Gesu Honduras for 25 years + all our children have been through Gesu. If I were to diagram my life, Gesu is right at the heart of it!"
"I deeply cherish our church as a central part of our lives, where we've celebrated marriages, baptisms, first communions, and mourned loved ones together. It's not just a place of worship but a cornerstone of our community, rich with shared memories and spiritual growth. I hope it continues to be a welcoming and supportive environment where future generations can find the same sense of belonging, faith, and fellowship."

The Mass of the Holy Spirit is a deeply significant tradition within Jesuit history, marking the beginning of the academic year. This special liturgy invites students, faculty, and staff to seek the guidance and inspiration of the Holy Spirit in their endeavors. The Mass emphasizes the Jesuit commitment to "finding God in all things" and fostering a community grounded in discernment and spiritual growth. This past Thursday, John Carroll University celebrated Mass of the Holy Spirit at Gesu and on Friday Gesu Catholic School had ours. Come Holy Spirit! #AMDGButton

Dear Gesù Family- These last days have been a journey through darkness that turns into brilliant light. The tragedy and sinfulness of Jesus’ betrayal on Holy Thursday and death on Good Friday turns into the brilliance of forgiveness and healing on Easter. This journey is similar to the journey we are all called to make in our daily lives: to transform the darkness into light. This Easter we are called to bring the transformative power of Jesus to our world, our families, our lives and our parish. Jesus is the One who can bind and transform any areas, relationships, or sins that we carry into whole, beautiful and just endeavors for the good of all. I am encouraged daily by the many good works, hundreds of volunteer hours and loving hearts of our parishioners. I, for one, witness daily the brilliant light of resurrection here in our community amidst the darkness of the world. Let us all continue to bring our darkness to the One who transforms it into light and be that light for all. The light of a grade school child reciting the Our Father. The light of the Eucharist brought to someone who is homebound. The light of our Gesu Mission in Honduras. The light of nine nights of witness to how the Eucharist shapes our lives in our Novena of Grace. The light of parents raising their kids in the Faith. The light of a welcoming face. The light of music that lifts the soul to heaven. The light of organization after organization caring for the least among us. The light of a child screaming “Jesus” to the question: “Who is your best friend?” The light of a votive candle burning for an intention. The light of a flower coming up to welcome Spring. As a parish, we are so grateful for the blessings of Sr. Linda and Sr. Kathleen. Through their ministries in the Church and school, they have instructed, encouraged, supported, cried, laughed and walked with each of us in their own special ways. We thank them for their dedication to the parish and never-ending devotion to the young and old in the community. As they begin their new chapters, we will miss their friendly voices, bright smiles, and genuine compassion for all. We wish them well and pray for their happiness. They have moved to Merici Crossings, the Ursuline motherhouse on the campus of Ursuline College, but may they forever call Gesu their home and know that the door is always open for them.Button

Participants of Gesu's Honduras Summer Immersion Trip leave today! Through the experience of an immersion trip, participants are contributing significantly to many needs of the Honduran people. Participants are working on a construction project, building a wall for the boys’ orphanage. The trip also expands one’s view of the Creator, the great need in the world, and the relative unimportance of “things” in our lives. This is a trip of “reverse mission” where we learn some of life’s most important lessons from the poorest of the poor. This is Gesu’s first immersion trip since 2019. Please keep our participants and those they are serving in Honduras in your prayers!Button

Members of the 50+ Club visited the Cleveland Museum of Art on April 19 for a tour of the Tudor exhibit, which focused on the luxury that the Tudors commissioned for England during their reign. The German-Swiss artist Hans Holbein, one of the greatest portrait painters of the Tudor era, chronicled the luxury in detail. In the middle of all the splendor was also a bust of John Fisher, beheaded for not renouncing his faith and pledging allegiance to Elizabeth I. The same fate befell Thomas More, represented in a small cameo. The Jesuit martyrs of the period were not mentioned in the exhibit but have been part of the group’s ongoing conversation and learning, especially concerning Edmund Campion, who suffered a gruesome martyrdom in 1581. The 50+ group is pictured in front of a wall picturing Edward VI, the only surviving and legitimate son of Henry VIII and Jane Seymour.Button

This past Sunday, our PSR community gathered in the Bulldog Gym to pray together to end their year together. Fr. Laniauskas led the students, families and catechists in a time of prayer and reflection on the year that they have spent growing in their relationship with the Lord. During the prayer service, Cross necklaces were blessed for each child to wear this summer as a reminder to stay close to Jesus. We thanked our catechists who have prepared weekly lessons and journeyed with the students as they came to a deeper understanding of the Catholic faith. This community is such a blessing to our Proud Gesu Family!Button

St. Ignatius used a variety of prayer methods when offering individuals spiritual guidance, based on his own relationship with God. Members of the Jesuit religious order and their lay counterparts continue to use these forms of prayer today when providing individual spiritual direction or facilitating retreats and in their personal prayer. We will explore two of these methods during one program offered at two different times. Imaginative Gospel contemplation invites us to use all five senses to enter a particular Gospel scene. Lectio divina, or “holy reading,” encourages us to “listen” to how God might be “speaking” to us through a word, phrase or image in a particular scripture passage. Each prayer form helps us to connect God’s word to our daily lives. Please join us to learn about and experience imaginative prayer and lectio divina, whether you’re familiar with these methods or have never heard of them. ALL ARE WELCOME! Contact Marcia Leous at (216) 932-0617 or mleous@churchofthegesu.org for more information or to receive the Zoom link.Button

This past Sunday, Church of the Gesu celebrated the Rite for Sending Catechumens for Election and Candidates for Recognition by the Bishop. The RCIA catechumens (not baptized) and candidates (already baptized Christians) were sent forth by the parish and presented to Auxiliary Bishop Woost at St. John the Evangelist Cathedral later that day. They are now one step closer on their journey to Baptism and/or the sacraments of Confirmation and Eucharist or being received into the Full Communion of the Catholic Church. The parish community plays an important role in witnessing to the readiness of these individuals to continue onward to the Easter Vigil, when the sacraments will be celebrated. Prayer cards introducing each person are available on the tables near the church entrances. We encourage you to please take one and support these individuals by praying for them during the season of Lent.Button

How can a deep sense of joy be found in our heart and spirit despite the busy pace of life that is often filled with challenges? Anne DeMarco will share spiritual insights from the life of Mother Teresa to show how brief, grace-filled moments can rekindle the spark of Christian joy. Using examples from her rich experience in ministry, Anne will offer practical suggestions to begin the New Year in a positive, hopeful way. Anne DeMarco received her certification in Lay Ecclesial Ministry from St. Mary Seminary. Her extensive professional outreach has enriched the spiritual life of many, including members of the police force, the homeless, the incarcerated, and the adaptive needs community.
